Three Park Rapids students headed to State Art Exhibition

White settlers began moving into the Itasca State Park area in the early 1880s. Peter and Mary Turnbull were the first settlers. They built their cabin east of the current Peace Pipe Vista. On June 5, 1884, Mary gave birth to Charley F. Turnbull, the first known white child to be born at Itasca.

Ellery Overmyer, a Park Rapids Area High School senior, has submitted her painting of a redhead (Aythya americana) to the Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest. According to the Audubon Society, the total population of Redheads is “evidently far below original levels, a sharper decline than for most ducks. Loss of nesting habitat is probably the main cause.” (Submitted photo)
