The Park Rapids All School Reunion planning committee will meet at 7 p.m. tonight (Wednesday), July 21 at the Park Rapids American Legion.

The final planning meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4 at the Legion.

Thursday, July 22

The Park Rapids Area Library summer books sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 22 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, July 23 in the library basement.

Sponsored by Friends of the Library, the sale includes gently used hardcover and paperback books and more for all ages. It will feature older Danielle Steel novels at a special price, magazines for five cents, craft books and books on digital photography.

The second day holds additional bargains.

Raffle tickets for the quilt that was pieced and donated to the Friends of the Library will be available.

All ages are welcome; the library is handicapped accessible.

The Hubbard County Master Gardeners, using a grant from ConAgra Foods, will be working at the DNR Fisheries site at the Fish Hook River dam in Park Rapids from 10 a.m. to noon. Thursday, July 22.

The public is invited to attend the event, either to help pull specific weeds, plant native plants or simply learn about those plants and the project. 

Anyone wishing to work should wear long sleeves, gloves and sturdy shoes.  Participants may wish to bring a sack lunch. 

Master Gardeners will provide dessert treats, water and lemonade.

The Downtown Business Association is sponsoring a free community picnic from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 22 on the first four blocks of Main to generate support during the renewal project.

Aang, from the television series Avatar and the new film, "The Last Airbender," will greet fans at Pioneer Park, courtesy of Arvig Communication Systems.

Entertainment at Pioneer Park will include the following: Fran Gack, Ben Ranson, Northern Light Wind Quintet, Alabaster Falls and Northern Light Opera Company.

Nate Luetgers will do caricature drawings and the Hubbard County Sheriff's Office will be doing Kids IDs. There will be live radio coverage as well.

The first 200 kids who eat at the picnic will receive a sand pail and shovel they can use to dig for prizes in a giant sand pile. Kids through age 12 are asked to sign up from 5 to 6 p.m. and the dig will start at 6 p.m.

Hot dogs and hamburgers, chips, cookies and soft drinks are on the menu. Other beverages and treats will be available from downtown restaurants.

A brief groundbreaking ceremony is planned at 4:45 p.m.

Bring a camera to capture before and after picture of historic Main street. Visitors are invited to pick up the new Positively Park Rapids Destination Guide, including a map of the area featuring the best places to shop, dine and play.

  Tonic Sol-fa, a four-member a cappella group, will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, July 22 at the Historic Holmes Theatre.

  Tonic Sol-fa has spent the past decade on the road carving their niche as the nation's top vocal group.  In that time, this quartet has been named one of the top five "must see" groups in America, has been awarded numerous original song and album awards in pop, gospel and holiday genres, appeared on NBC's Today Show and in Newsweek magazine.

The North Country Trail Association, Itasca-Moraine chapter, is inviting hikers on a 3.3-mile hike beginning at 9:15 a.m.  Saturday, July 24

The starting point is where the North Country Trail crosses Hubbard Co. Rd. 91 approximately 15 miles north of Nevis/Dorset or 5.3 miles south of the intersection of Co. Rd. 91 and Highways 71/200.

The hike goes from Steamboat Forest Road southeast to Refuge Road.

Hikers may take the Nelson Lake Campground Spur which will add a 1.6 mile hike around Nelson Lake.  The hike passes through spruce and red pine plantations with some terrific vistas.

The All Veterans Memorial Committee will be at the Park Rapids Farmers Market on Main Saturday, July 24.

They will have memorial stones available and will take donations for ongoing work for the memorial.

The Friendly Squares will host the "Source of the Mississippi Hoedown" square dance on Saturday, July 24 at the Park Rapids American Legion.

The event will start at 2 p.m. with a round dance workshop.  Then at 3 p.m. a "plus " square dance workshop, at 3:30 p.m. a mainstream workshop and at 4:30 p.m. a contra dance workshop.  

Club members will offer a supper at 5:30 p.m.  The evening dancing will start at 6:30 with round dancing and at 7 p.m. with mainstream square dancing with occasional plus tip and one contra dance.

Callers will be Tom Allen and Dick Rueter with Donna Stone cueing rounds and Duane Olson as prompter for contras. 

Visiting dancers and spectators are welcome.
