Idol' star Sanjaya to perform at Fargo circus

Sanjaya Malakar, who finished seventh in the 2007 season of "American Idol," wil perform at the Shrine Circus this weekend in Fargo.

The Shrine Circus in Fargo is getting by with a little help from an unexpected friend.

Former "American Idol" standout Sanjaya Malakar will perform during this weekend's run at the Fargodome.

Malakar, who created as much of a buzz with his fashion and hairstyles as he did his performance during 2007's season six of the singing showcase, will open the show with the Shrine Chanters, singing the national anthem. He'll perform again, though solo, later in the first half of the show.

"It's a big shot in the arm (for the circus)," said Bryan Shinn, public relations spokesman for the El Zagal Shrine Circus.

Shinn said Malakar's appearance is a byproduct of the region's flooding, which postponed the first scheduled dates of the circus earlier this month and threatened cancellation when replacement acts were hard to find.

Shinn said Malakar will "congratulate us on what a great job we did fighting the flood."

"There's a warm, fuzzy feeling around the country right now," Shinn said Thursday morning.

Malakar performed at Thursday's opening show at 7 and will sing again Saturday at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m. Shinn wasn't sure if Malakar would be on hand for the 5 p.m. Sunday show.
