Get ready for "Reading by Design"!
It may be hard to imagine with snow on the ground, but just a short month from now you'll be wondering about the library's summer reading program for ages 2-18.
With this year's theme, "Reading by Design," we have a packed schedule all summer long! Focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), STEAM (add in Art), and design gives us some great events for fun and learning.
One new event is "GIRLS ❤ STEAM," a special summer-long gathering of girls of all ages to explore space, science and hands-on Learning. We'll go online to see what NASA is discovering, explore all kinds of sciences, and prepare for the August 21 solar eclipse. There will be fun, nerdy-geeky learning for every level — from 5-year-olds through teens — every other Friday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., starting June 9 through August.
Recently, the Friends of the Library purchased a movie license for the library. (Thank you, Friends!) This opens up new possibilities in programming, including monthly movie matinees and other special movie viewing events.
On Monday, July 31, we will be showing a special interactive version of the movie "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," complete with goodie bags and treats to celebrate Harry Potter's birthday! That means when Albus Dumbledore uses his deluminator to snuff out the lights on Privet Drive on screen, we will turn out the lights as well.
In August, we introduce "The TRASHION Collection," a combination of trash and fashion. It's a showcase for young designers to create fashion, accessories and jewelry from repurposed items. Designers can sign up over the summer and then bring in their best finished creations August 10-12. Their work will be on display August 14- 19 in the library's young adult area.
Now is a great time to apply for a new Kitchigami Regional Library System card. If you haven't used your card in a while, come in or give us a call at 732-4966 and we'll make sure it is up-to-date and ready to use.
If you have lost your card, a replacement is $2 but with almost 2,200 movies and thousands of books available to check out for free at this location, it is a terrific investment.
If you have tried to use your card in the past and have received the message to "..see a librarian," DON'T PANIC. It usually means that your card simply needs to have its yearly renewal. If there is an issue with your card, there are several ways we can help you clear it.
Join us for a terrific summer of "Reading by Design"!
