Wrestlers pin losses on Wolves, Blue Devils
The Park Rapids wrestling team relied on 11 pins to defeat Virginia and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley/Nevis in a triangular meet at Walker Thursday night.
Five pins and four forfeits led the Panthers to a 59-18 win over Virginia while six pins sparked a 49-30 victory over the host Wolves. WHAN defeated Virginia 51-24 in the other match.
In the win over Virginia, the Panthers trailed 18-11 before taking control.
Jared Sunram built a 14-3 lead before recording a pin at the 5:39 mark in the 113-pound match before Nolan Booge used a takedown and two nearfalls in the first period and a pair of nearfalls in the second for a 15-0 technical fall win at 120 as the Panthers claimed an 11-6 advantage.
Virginia won the next two matches to take the lead before the Panthers won the final eight matches.
Ben Baumgartner led 12-0 before recording a pin at the 3:59 mark at 145 and Justin Dravis used a quick takedown to set up a pin in 35 seconds at 152.
After Austin Parker (at 160) and Luke Weaver (at 170) received forfeits, John Kyllonen used a takedown and two nearfalls to set up a pin at the 1:24 mark at 182 for a 41-18 advantage.
Forfeit wins by Jeff Dickinson at 195 and Trai Schmidt at 220 and a pin at the 1:28 mark by Chris Baxter at heavyweight capped off the win over the Blue Devils.
The Panthers won eight of the first nine matches to defeat WHAN.
A forfeit win by Adrian Ness at 106, a 6-2 minor decision by Sunram at 113 and a pin in 38 seconds by Booge at 120 gave Park Rapids a quick 15-0 advantage. Sunram used a first-period takedown and reversals in the second and third periods for his win.
Four pins and a major decision pushed the lead to 43-6. Zach Nelson used a reversal to set up a pin at the 1:40 mark at 132, Logan Johnson used a second-period reversal to set up a pin at the 2:27 mark at 138 and Baumgartner used a quick takedown for a pin at the 1:16 mark at 145 to give Park Rapids a 33-6 advantage.
Dravis used a takedown and nearfall in the first period and a nearfall in the third period for a 9-0 major decision at 152 before Weaver needed only 19 seconds for a pin at 160 to seal the win.
John Kyllonen concluded the scoring for the Panthers with a pin at the 1:22 mark at 182.
Pins by Collin Huckbody at 195, Christopher Zimmer at 220 and Nick Fischer at heavyweight concluded the scoring for WHAN.
The two wins lifted Park Rapids' record in dual meets to 4-8 while Virginia fell to 5-13 and WHAN fell to 2-5.
In this week's state polls, Baumgartner is rated No. 4 at 132 pounds in Class AA while Huckbody (No. 1 at 182) and Zimmer (No. 2 at 195) are rated among the best in Class A.
