Wrestlers end regular season with two dual wins
Two wins in the regular-season finale at Fosston Tuesday night locked up the No. 6 seed in the Section 8A tournament for the Park Rapids wrestling team.
The Panthers defeated Fosston/Bagley 40-28 and Red Lake County Central 66-18 to end the regular season with a 10-12 record in dual meets.
Park Rapids opens the section tournament today (Saturday) with a quarterfinal match against No. 3 Crookston at 12:30 at Thief River Falls. The semifinals will be held at 4 p.m. with the championship match following at 6. Frazee was seeded No. 1 and Badger/Greenbush/Middle River received the No. 2 seed.
The Section 8A individual tournament will be held Feb. 26-27 at Glyndon.
On Tuesday night, the Panthers used five pins to defeat Fosston/Bagley and eight pins and three forfeits to defeat Red Lake County Central.
Laine Jensen's pin at 103 pounds, Cameron Free's 11-9 decision at 119 and Dylan Holmer's 8-2 decision at 125 gave the Panthers a 12-3 lead against Fosston/Bagley. Jensen led 4-0 with a pair of takedowns before recording his pin at the 2:41 mark. Free used a takedown, reversal and nearfall to build a 6-2 lead in the first period and held on with a second-period reversal and third-period takedown. Holmer used a pair of first-period takedowns and a takedown in the second period to spark his win.
Pins by Adam Branstrom at 135 and Zach Steffen at 145 gave Park Rapids a 24-13 lead. A takedown and nearfall set up Branstrom's pin at the 1:06 mark while Steffen used a takedown and two nearfalls to build a 10-0 lead before recording a pin at the 5:11 mark.
Danny Pike's pin at 160 and Jared Nash's 12-4 major decision at 171 pushed the Panthers' lead to 34-16. A pair of takedowns gave Pike a 4-0 lead before his pin at the 2:23 mark while Nash used a takedown in the first period, a nearfall and takedown in the second period, and a pair of takedowns in the third period to spark his win.
Kenny Weaver used a takedown and nearfall to set up his pin at 1:42 in the heavyweight match to seal the victory.
The Panthers dominated their match against RLCC as first-period pins by Jensen at 103, Free at 119, Holmer at 125, Steffen at 140, Zac Haugland at 145, Pike at 160, John Drury at 189 and Weaver at heavyweight led the way.
Park Rapids also received forfeit wins by Luke Hartig at 130, Branstrom at 135 and Nash at 171.
