Woman accused in theft of $9,000 in DVDs from Wal-Mart stores in Fargo area
DILWORTH – A Mexican national living in Los Angeles is accused of working with another person to steal more than $9,000 worth of DVDs from Wal-Mart stores in the Fargo area in 2012.
Samantha Velez-Diaz, 28, was arrest Tuesday on a felony charge of aiding and abetting a theft. The charge carries a potential maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, if convicted.
Court documents allege Wal-Mart store workers in Dilworth and in Fargo notified police in April 2012 of a man and a woman caught on surveillance tape working together to steal DVDs. The missing DVDs were worth $9,131.04.
Dilworth police learned that a month before the alleged thefts, South Dakota state troopers pulled over Velez-Diaz and a man who had a large number of new DVDs with Wal-Mart tags.
The two gave conflicting reports on where the DVDs had come from, and neither could produce a receipt. Investigators believe those DVDs may have been stolen in a similar manner from a Wal-Mart in Vermillion, S.D.
Her next court date is set for March 17.
