Wolves' Huckbody, Zimmer win medals
Walker-Hackensack-Akeley/Nevis' Collin Huckbody and Christopher Zimmer brought home medals from last weekend's state Class A wrestling tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Huckbody capped off his junior season by placing fourth at 170 pounds while Zimmer capped off his junior season by placing third at 195 pounds.
Huckbody, who entered the state tournament ranked No. 5 at 170 pounds, pinned Breckenridge senior Cole Praus in 1:01 and defeated Kenyon-Wanamingo junior Alex Jackson 7-2 last Friday to reach the semifinals. Praus was rated No. 10 entering state.
During last Saturday's finals, top-rated Cooper Moore of Jackson County Central pinned Huckbody in 3:41. Huckbody rebounded from that loss to defeat Pierz senior Nathan Tomala 5-3 before falling to Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa junior Patrick Rooney 6-5 in the third-place match. Moore defeated Kimball senior Travis Schiefelbein 13-2 in the championship match to cap off his senior season with a 46-0 record. Schiefelbein, who was ranked No. 8, ended his season at 35-6 while Rooney, who was rated No. 7, ended at 39-2.
Huckbody, who was the Section 8A champion, concluded his season with a 32-4 record.
Zimmer, who entered state ranked No. 3 at 195, reached the semifinals with a 7-0 win over MACCRAY senior Brent Jaenisch and a 7-3 decision over Blue Earth Area sophomore Kysten Zierke last Friday.
After dropping a 10-3 decision to Sibley East sophomore Nathan Rose, Zimmer defeated Chatfield junior Justin Viss 8-1 before edging Parkers Prairie junior Tyler Schlosser 4-3 in the third-place match. Rose, who entered as the No. 2-rated wrestler, defeated Minneota senior Adam Josephson 5-3 to cap off a 45-0 season. Josephson, who was the top-rated wrestler, finished the season at 42-2. Zimmer, who qualified for state as the section champion at 195, ended at 39-1, Viss ended at 35-12 and Schlosser ended at 32-9.
The other five area qualifiers didn't advance to the finals.
United North Central junior Jake Malone opened with a 6-4 loss to Zumbrota-Mazeppa junior Mitchell Watkins and was eliminated when Watkins was defeated by Royalton senior Andy Poster in the quarterfinals at 126 pounds. Malone ended the season with a 24-6 record.
WHAN senior Blake Wiemann opened with a 9-1 loss to Madelia junior Adam Cooling, defeated Kimball senior Caramon Hansen 12-8 in the wrestlebacks, and was eliminated with a 6-1 loss to Medford senior Brad Maas in the 145-pound bracket. Wiemann ended the season with a 31-11 record.
At 152 pounds, WHAN senior Devin Wicks defeated Minnewaska sophomore Ryan Stottler 7-4 in the first round before being pinned by Wabasso senior Mitchell Rohlik in 5:26 in the quarterfinals. In the wrestlebacks, Wicks eliminated Goodhue junior Mitchell Breuer 5-0 before being eliminated with a 2-1 loss to LeSueur-Henderson junior Chris Pfarr. Wicks ended his season with a 21-5 record.
WHAN senior Joe Anderson defeated Aitkin junior Isaac Novak 14-7 in the first round before being pinned by Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg junior Jordan Rothers in 3:43 in the quarterfinals. Anderson was eliminated from the 160-pound bracket with a 12-6 loss to Blue Earth Area junior Carter Hanson. Anderson finished the season with a 33-7 record.
UNC sophomore Taylor Carlson made his state debut with a 5-2 win over Royalton junior Cory Wensmann before dropping a 13-2 decision to Wabasso senior Cody Welch. Carlson was eliminated from the 220-pound bracket with a 15-4 loss to LeSueur-Henderson senior Austin Pagel in the first round of the wrestlebacks. Carlson ended the season with a 33-11 record.
