Willmar woman charged in stiletto assault
WILLMAR -- A 20-year-old Willmar woman made her first court appearance Monday on a felony assault charge for allegedly striking a woman in the face with a stiletto-heel shoe and causing serious injury to her eye.
Andrea Lee Diaz faces one third-degree assault charge and one fifth-degree assault charge in Kandiyohi County District Court.
Unconditional bail was set at $75,000. Her next appearance is June 27.
According to the complaint, Willmar police officers were called around 1 a.m. May 8 to Rice Memorial Hospital regarding injuries to two women who had been assaulted at the Caribbean Club.
The women reported they had gone to the club with friends and were dancing when someone assaulted them from behind by striking each in the face. The women said they had not had any verbal or physical confrontation with anyone and were completely surprised by the attack.
Another member of their party said they saw Diaz giving the women dirty looks and that she took off her shoes and hit both women in the face. Diaz had also struggled with one of the women while they were down on the floor and several male patrons of the club had pulled Diaz off the woman after the assault.
Both women left the club and were taken to the hospital. They described the assailant as a Latino female. Multiple witnesses to the incident picked Diaz from a photo lineup prepared by police.
One of the women was referred to an eye specialist in St. Cloud who determined she has nerve damage, multiple fractures to her eye socket and extensive damage to her eye. The doctor also determined that the woman needs reconstructive surgery and may not regain vision in the eye.
