West Fargo man seriously injured in hit-and-run boating accident on Big Cormorant
Becker County authorities are asking for the public's help in identifying the operator of a boat involved in a hit and run accident that seriously injured a man on Big Cormorant Lake Wednesday evening.
Terry Lee Erickson, 39, of West Fargo received "substantial bodily harm," and his 4-year-old daughter also suffered minor injuries.
"Emergency personnel were notified that injured victims were being transported to the County Road 6 public access by witnesses who had been boating at the time," the Becker County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
Erickson was later transferred to a Twin Cities hospital.
He was on a 17-foot Bayliner with two other adults and two children. It was operating at a slow speed with navigation lights on when it was struck by another boat about 10:18 p.m.
"Witnesses have been unable to give a positive identification of the boat due to many factors, including darkness, and the speed at which the boat causing he damage was operating, and that the operator of the boat that struck and injured the individuals left the scene immediately," the sheriff's office said.
Investigators conducted an extensive search of Big Cormorant and were unable to locate the boat involved in the hit-and-run case.
They are possibly looking for a larger 18- or 20-foot white- or cream-colored boat, possibly with a cabin-style helm and a darker stripe along the side of the boat. It should have some damage to the bow or front area of the boat. It's not clear if the boat is fiberglass or aluminum.
Anyone with information that might pertain to the accident should contact the sheriff's office at 218-847-2661.
