Wear a lot.

Wash often.

Pass on.

That's the credo greeting clientele at Wears Like New, the consignment store opening on Highway 34 just east of the Fish Hook River Bridge.

Eighteen totes of clothing stored in a pole barn and a newly arrived assistant/consultant were the impetus behind Amanda Fletcher's decision to open the "gently used" consignment store.

"I wanted something where I could bring Jaxen," Fletcher explained of her 10-month-old son. And husband Robert told her she was "clogging his snowmobile space."

The Park Rapids native conducted research on the idea. "Americans," she determined, "have too many clothes." She decided to provide a solution - reusing - and headed down to the metro for racks and shelves.

The store, opening Nov. 5, accepts items on consignment or donation, with 50 percent of the selling price retrieved by the owner. Fletcher displays items for 90 days, at which time the items are to be picked up or she donates to Mahube.

The store holds an ever-changing inventory of maternity clothes, scrubs, sleepwear, baby items and clothing, toys, books, jewelry, household items and miscellaneous men's, women's and children's clothes.

She posts sale items on her Facebook page.

Fletcher has registered for notification of recalled baby items, pulling them from the inventory as necessary.

The store also features holiday gift baskets, created by Margie Blackburn.

Wears Like New is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, closing time based on "customer flow."
