Waubun defeats Tigers in semifinals

  Head coach Shawn Klimek couldn’t have asked for a better start from the Nevis football team in a Section 9-man semifinal playoff game against Waubun last Saturday night at Nevis.

     The rest of the game didn’t go so well for the Tigers.

     Kiefer Miller opened the game by returning the kickoff 60 yards to give the Tigers a quick 6-0 lead.

     But Waubun responded with Chris Manypenny’s 10-yard TD reception and Kyle Erickson’s 1-yard TD run in the first quarter and Dylan Donner’s 8-yard TD run and Ryan Weber’s 5-yard TD run in the second quarter to build a 28-6 lead.

     Austin Becker hit Gavin Becker on a 40-yard scoring route as Nevis cut the gap to 28-14 at the half.

     The No. 3-seeded Bombers sealed the win with a pair of 3-yard TD runs by Weber in the third quarter and Erickson in the fourth quarter for a 42-14 advantage.

     Gavin Becker’s 19-yard TD catch from Austin Becker concluded the scoring as the No. 2-seeded Tigers ended the season with a 7-3 record.

     Austin Becker completed 6 of 11 passes for 91 yards and rushed 19 times for 46 yards to lead the Tigers’ offense, which was held to 187 yards on the night. Gavin Becker made three catches for 69 yards and Miller rushed four times for 47 yards.

     Defensively, Michael Tranby made 12 solo tackles and assisted on seven other tackles. Miller added eight solo tackles while Jordan Spenst made six solo tackles. Austin Becker and Michael Babler recovered fumbles for the only turnovers.

     The Bombers compiled 21 first downs and 382 yards in offense, led by 352 yards on 65 running plays. Weber rushed 17 times for 118 yards to lead Waubun’s offense.

     Waubun improved to 7-3 and advanced to the section title game against No. 1 Ada-Borup (8-2).
