Bids came in low for the Park Rapids water treatment facility, meaning once final funding comes back from the state construction could begin later this summer.

Di-Mar Construction, of Excelsior, was the low bidder with $2,055,000. Engineering estimates were about $2,166,000, according to city engineer Brian Hiles.

Much of the cost will be grant funding from the state. Hiles expects to receive final word from the state before the end of the fiscal year, June 30.

The potential grant money comes from federal Department of Employment and Economic Development funding and the Public Facilities Authority drinking water revolving fund, which comes down through the Environmental Protection Agency.

Hiles said he did some research on Di-Mar Construction and heard positive comments from others who have worked with them on water treatment projects.

The water treatment facility will be built to the south of Frank White Education Center near the water tower.

The city has been forced to look at constructing a water treatment facility due to increasing nitrate levels. After trying different options, including deeper wells, it was determined that the only other viable option is a treatment facility.
