Warne throws no-hitter, strikes out 15 to spark Panthers' sweep
Brie Warne was nearly perfect and Olivia Vaadeland was equally impressive on the mound as the Park Rapids fastpitch softball team swept a Mid-State Conference doubleheader from Crosby-Ironton Tuesday at the Area High School field.
Warne just missed pitching a perfect game by allowing no hits and one walk while striking out 15 in a 12-0 five-inning victory in the first game. The 15 strikeouts broke the school record of 14 set by Jackie Gray in 1992.
In the second game, Vaadeland pitched a one-hitter as the Panthers completed the sweep with a 20-0 five-inning win.
Warne struck out 15 of the 16 batters she faced and was backed by an offense that capitalized on seven hits and 11 walks as the Panthers won the opener.
Vaadeland's two-run homer gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead in the first before an RBI triple by Amber Sunram sparked a three-run second.
Alyssa Carlson's two-run single, an RBI single by Warne and an RBI double by Vaadeland led to five runs in the third before the Panthers ended the game by scoring twice in the fourth.
Carlson and Vaadeland drove in three runs apiece to lead the Panthers' offense. Warne improved to 4-1 on the season.
In the second game, a 10-run fourth inning completed the sweep as the Panthers took advantage of nine hits, 13 walks and six errors.
Four walks led to four runs in the second and seven walks and an RBI single by Carlson led to six runs in the third. Three errors, RBI doubles by Taylor Ondracek and Ashley Domino, and a pair of RBI singles by Bonnie Baumgartner sparked the 10-run fourth.
Carlson, Anna Grimes and Baumgartner had two hits each while Carson Christenson and Grimes scored four runs apiece to lead the Panthers' offense. Vaadeland gave up one single and four walks while striking out eight for her first varsity win as the Panthers improved to 5-1 overall.
