W-DC boys hold back Panthers' comeback

Wadena-Deer Creek was able to hold off a second-half comeback to defeat the Park Rapids boys basketball team 55-39 in a Mid-State Conference game Friday night at the Area High School gym.

W-DC built a 28-14 at the half before the Panthers opened the second half with a 15-6 run to get back in the game.

Paul Dirks hit a jumper, converted a three-point play on a layup and made two free throws a the Panthers trailed 30-21 with 12:00 to play. A jumper by Max Brown, two layups by Taylor Kimball and a layup by Christian Ridlon closed the gap to 34-29 with 8:28 remaining.

The Wolverines then went on an 11-4 run to push the lead back to double digits. Ridlon and Dirks had field goals for the Panthers during that stretch.

Jumpers by Dirks and Roth Mattson kept Park Rapids within 49-37 with 2:16 to play before W-DC hit four free throws in the final 2:06 to seal the win.

Dirks scored 11 points to lead the Panthers, who fell to 0-7 in Mid-State play and 0-16 overall.

Scott Syverson scored 18 points and Ryan Nelson added 17 points for the Wolverines, who improved to 3-5 in conference play and 8-8 overall.
