A face familiar to many has returned to Park Rapids.

Joel Vorhes opened a law practice on First Street East this fall, but many know him from his role in the banking industry.

The Macalester College graduate began his career as a banker, working in several Minnesota cities. He earned a master's degree in accounting at Truman State University in 1992, working as an accountant for a muzzle rifle company for a year before heading north.

He assumed the role of operations officer at Northwoods Bank in 1993.

His career path would send him to the metro in 1998, returning to Park Rapids a short time later to complete compliance, audits and loan reviews of northern Minnesota banks.

During his time in Park Rapids, he was active in the community as a member of the Lions, Calvary Lutheran, the Salvation Army and other civic organizations.

In 2003, he headed to Hamline University law school, completing studies in December 2005. He continued his role in the banking industry, working as an operations officer in the Twin Cities and for the FDIC in Columbia, Mo. as a compliance officer.

He returned to Park Rapids last summer, consulting with Mark Thomason on the need for an attorney in the city.

In September, he began practicing general law - family, real estate, estate planning and elder law.

"I've always been interested in law," he said. Initially, he planned to become a Certified Public Accountant and earn a law degree, specializing in tax work. "I put that off."

Now, he's opened a new chapter in his career.

Vorhes is available Monday through Friday and weekends by appointment at his office located at 501 First St. East, Suite 5. He may be reached at 237-2250.
