Volunteers will begin tax preparations Jan. 23
The Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Mahube Tax Aide Program helps area residents complete their federal, state and local tax filing obligations at no cost.
The program is offered to residents who consider themselves to have low to moderate income. This year the tax season runs from Feb. 1 - April 16, 2012.
All appointments are made at the Mahube offices: Park Rapids, 218-732-7204, Detroit Lakes, 218-847-1385, and Mahnomen, 218-935-5022. Residents can call any time between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. from Monday through Friday to make appointments.
At the Park Rapids office, appointments will be made beginning Monday, Jan. 23. For years, the IRS has encouraged sites to arrange for every return to be quality reviewed; this year, it is mandatory. That means that two pairs of eyes must look at each return before it is filed.
Preparers will do returns on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Park Rapids Mahube office.
VITA/Mahube volunteers are IRS certified tax preparers.
Here's what to bring to tax aide appointments:
n Make sure to bring Social Security cards or Tax Identification Numbers (TIN) for everyone included on the return.
n If you receive Social Security benefits, you must bring form SSA 1099, which you will receive in the mail sometime during January 2012, which indicates your total Social Security benefits for 2011.
n Also bring your 2010 tax return.
n And bring all employer furnished tax materials, such as a W-2 for each job you held during 2011.
n If you receive SSI, you will need to request SSI income verification from the Social Security Administration.
