Feds Feed Families is a national food drive led by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and other federal agencies to raise food for Americans struggling with hunger across the country.

Federal Agencies have donated the following: 2009 - 1 million pounds, 2010 - 1.7 million pounds and 2011 - 5.79 million pounds. USDA's 2012 goal is 1.8 million pounds of food. Of that goal, Minnesota USDA wants to raise 61,835 pounds of food.

One way to meet this goal is by gleaning. Gleaning is going over a field or area that has just been harvested and gathering by hand any usable parts of the crop that remain. And it also gives farmers a way to use produce that would otherwise be wasted. Each year, well over 100 billion pounds of food are thrown away in this country (about 20 percent of America's food supply).

The USDA Ag Service Center in Park Rapids is planning a Gleaning Field Day next week. A representative from R.D. Offutt Company will let them know which potato field will be ready to pick on Monday or Wednesday. The potatoes will be dropped off at the Hubbard County Food Shelf the following day.

If you want to help with the Gleaning Project, call 732-0121 by 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 20.
