Lukas Neubarth's body was recovered from the icy lake Friday noon.

Neubarth, 18 and 18-year-old Thomas Plendl, also of Brownton, were towing a fish house back to the shore of Third Crow Wing Lake when they fell through the ice to open water near the mouth of the Crow Wing River. Plendl was taken to St. Joseph's Area Health Services in Park Rapids, where he was treated for hypothermia and released later Thursday night.

He had reentered the water to try to pull Neubarth out, but became exhausted and was unable to save his friend. The two are seniors in high school, witnesses said.

The Hubbard County Sheriff's Office said darkness, unfamiliarity with the surroundings and poor visibility from a snow-storm may have hampered the teens' ability to see the open water.

Hubbard County was assisted by the Lakes Area Dive Team, Nevis First Responders, North Memorial Ambulance, Hubbard First Responders and the Walker Fire Department. Rescuers described very difficult conditions trying to get to the open water spot on the lake that was a few hundreds yard offshore.
