Loran Carl, 74, had been in a coma since the crash on UND's campus. He was at Bethesda Hospital, a long-term care facility in St. Paul, when he died.

"We feel that dad is now in a better place, not broken up and trying to heal. Dads appearance looks of one that is at peace," says a Wednesday evening post on Carl's CaringBridge site. "He Will Be Missed!"

Funeral arrangements have not yet been made, the site says.

On Sept. 8, Carl was crossing Campus Road shortly before 8 a.m. when he was hit by a car driven by Josiah Nordmark, a 22-year-old UND student who was headed to class.

Carl, an employee in the carpet shop of UND's Facilities Building, suffered a severe brain injury and several broken bones.

Nordmark, who was driving east, told police the glare of the morning sun made it difficult to see. He told police he was wearing sunglasses and had the car's visor down.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol analyzed the crash scene and calculated that Nordmark's car was going between 14 and 25 mph before Carl was hit, according to an investigation report.

Last month, Grand Forks County prosecutors decided not to file criminal charges in connection with the crash.
