Utility work complete, concrete work begins on Highway 34
Concrete work will begin now that underground util-ity work is completed on the south side of Highway 34 between Fair and Riverside avenues.
At this week's construction meeting, Allan Minnerath of Central Special-ties, Alexandria, general contractor for the Highway 34 project, said concrete work - curb and gutter, con-crete walks and driveway pavement - could take from two to three weeks.
It's expected underground utility work will be finished between Fair and Western avenues by the end of next week. After that, earthwork will be completed and then paving.
Minnerath said the west-ernmost section will be the first to be paved but that may be three weeks away.
With the fair underway, Minnerath said Fair Avenue to the highway would be regraded before the end of the day Thursday.
Gary Fingalson of Sellin Brothers, Hawley, said the building on the northeast corner of the fairgrounds will be removed July 23. Once the building is gone, contractors can begin work to realign Fair and Helten avenues.
The detour from Western Avenue to Helten Avenue on Highway 34 remains in ef-fect. Westbound traffic is routed north on Western Avenue to Monico Lane, east to Helten Avenue and south to Highway 34. Traffic from the opposite direction will follow the detour in re-verse.
Weekly construction meetings are at 1 p.m. Thursdays at the Park Rap-ids Area Library, located at 210 West 1st St.
