UPDATED: Walker man stabbed to death, suspect charged
Sheriff Tom Burch reports that on 03-21-12 at approximately 10:15 PM, Cass County authorities responded to a report of a stabbing in the Onigum area. Upon their arrival, deputies found a victim who had been stabbed. The victim, Jason Dale Howard, 22, Walker, died of apparent stab wounds to the chest while enroute to the hospital. The suspect, Sheldon James Smith, age 20, has been taken into custody in connection with the stabbing by Cass County authorities and is being held in the Cass County Jail pending formal charges. Sheriff Tom Burch reports the incident remains under investigation with an autopsy pending.
Sheldon James Smith has been charged with Murder in the Second Degree, for the stabbing death of a 22-year-old Walker man, occurring on or about March 21, 2012.
The Complaint alleges that Smith stabbed Howard during an encounter between two groups of individuals. Smith fled the scene with his companions. The victim died on the way to the hospital. Smith was apprehended without incident on the morning of March 22, 2012.
Smith appeared for arraignment on March 22, 2012. Cass County District Court Judge David Harrington set unconditional bail at $750,000 or $500,000 with conditions. Smith's next court appearance is scheduled for April 2, 2012. The Cass County Sheriff's Department, Leech Lake Tribal Police and Walker City Police are involved in the investigation, which is ongoing.
