A snowmobile driver was transported to the Park Rapids hospital early Saturday after colliding head-on with an electrical utility box near Schweitzer Lake in Hubbard County.

Richard John Ulvin II, 42, of Park Rapids, was found lying on his back unconscious at the scene, off Hubbard County Road 81. His helmet had come off during the impact. The crash scene is about five miles northeast of city limits.

He was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Area Health Services, where a blood-alcohol kit was ordered to determine if the 3 a.m. crash was alcohol-related.

Hundreds of snowmobilers hit the trails in Hubbard County Friday as temps soared into the high 30s. The temperature was still above freezing at the time of the crash.

Hubbard County Response, Hubbard County deputies, Park Rapids police and North Ambulance personnel responded.

Ulvinn received serious injuries, Hubbard Couty Sheriff Cory Aukes indicated. It was also unknown if he was riding alone or in a group.
