One person is dead following a collision with horses on the highway five miles south of Park Rapids early Saturday morning.

The name of the victim is Troy Hargreaves, 43, of Bemidji.

He person was driving a 2003 Dodge Caravan just before 5 a.m.

The northbound van “struck horses in the roadway,” according to the state patrol.

Livestock on roadways is a chronic problem in Hubbard County. Every day deputies are wrangling cows, goats, horses and other critters off Hubbard County highways and gravel roads.

This crash took place at milepost 255, a mile south of the Four Mile Corner.

“What do you do?” Hubbard County Sheriff Cory Aukes asked, acknowledging there is a problem.

“When my officers know there’s a problem, they address it,” Aukes added. “Sometimes it can be shoddy fences or neglect. That isn’t always the case.”

Friday a deputy located a landowner on Highway 71 North that had horses running in the highway south of Bemidji.

The landowner was advised the horses could be a liability.

Aukes said the county is fairly sure who's horses were responsible for the crash, but declined to say who they belonged to.
