UPDATED: Akeley boy dies in snow plowing accident

A 4-year-old Akeley boy died after being accidentally struck by his father in a skid steer loader Thursday.

Hubbard County Sheriff Cory Aukes described the incident as a tragic accident.

Kyle Vredenburg was accidentally backed over while his father Ron was plowing snow, Aukes said. The family said Kyle and sister Jaden were playing in a snow fort when Kyle jumped onto his bike and rode it toward the loader.

Marv Vredenburg, a spokesman for the family, said his brother Ron, a building contractor, had always stressed safety around equipment and that he was moving snow quite a distance from the house where the children were playing.

"The family wants to stress that this was an accident...a very sad and tragic accident," said Marv. "We ask that family, friends and others support Ron, Brandy and Jayden in this time of tragedy."

Funeral arrangements are pending through Jones-Pearson Funeral Home of Park Rapids.
