The Park Rapids Retired Military Group will meet for fellowship and a monthly dinner at 6 p.m. tonight (Wednesday) at the Velvet Antler on Highway 34 East, Park Rapids.


Come and enjoy the company of others with retired military background and their families.

Thursday, Oct. 14

Friends of the Park Rapids Area Library will hold their fall book sale from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, at the library.

   This is a great time to stock up on gently used books, magazines, CDs, movies and puzzles to entertain all ages during the cold months ahead.

    The library basement is accessible to all.

PEO Chapter FQ meet at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 14 at the home of Lois Madsen with co-hostess Edith Kufus. 

The program will be the Auction, Bring and Buy fundraiser.

Friday, Oct. 15

A barbecue rib dinner benefiting Living at Home will be served from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15 at the Park Rapids American Legion.

The meal includes ribs, baked potato, coleslaw, veggies and assorted desserts.

The Mantrap Valley Conservation Club is having a pork roast supper from 5 to 7 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 15 at the clubhouse located 1.5 miles east of Emmaville on CSAH 24. 

Meal includes pork roast, mashed potatoes and gravy, coleslaw, squash, green beans, roll, dessert and beverage.

A free will donation will be accepted.

Saturday, Oct. 16

The Twisted Stitchers Fiber Guild will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16 at

at the Park Rapids Area Library.

The program presenter will be Kathey Skarie who will share her collection of antique crocheted undergarments and patterns.

Those attending should bring projects to share with the group. For more information, call 652-4816.

The humorous musical, Deer Camp, will be performed at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16 at the Wadena Memorial Auditorium.

Take four buddies from Elmwood, plenty of beer, songs and a hunting shack and the only ones safe in the woods are the deer.

For years, the mighty hunters have spent time sipping suds and carrying on pseudo-intelligent conversation. Now their wives have issued a threat: Bring home a deer instead of a hangover.

What do they do to solve the dilemma? Shoot one? Buy one? Steal one?

They try everything - with hilarious results.

The Headwaters Intervention Center fall fundraiser, a spaghetti and meatball dinner and silent auction, will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16 at the Park Rapids American Legion.

Eddie Kidd will provide music. Door prizes will be awarded.

The Wolf Lake Lions will host a wild game feed from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16 in the Lions Hall.

The menu includes salmon, halibut and other fish as well as goose, moose, wild turkey and more.

Sunday, Oct. 17

The Nevis Red Hat Ladies are going to the Geritol Frolics Sunday, Oct. 17 in Brainerd.

Meet at Muskie Park at 10:30 a.m. for rides.

For more information, contact Mary at 652-4232. Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church in Nevis will host a turkey dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17.

The menu includes turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, dressing, vegetable, coleslaw, cranberries and apple pie with ice cream.

First City Squares of Bemidji is hosting a square dance from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17 at the United Methodist Fellowship Hall, 9th and Beltrami. 

Plus tips will be in the first half hour.  Royce Nelson will be the caller and Donna Stone will be cueing rounds.

Monday, Oct. 18

Ancestry Detectives 101; Beginning Genealogy will be offered from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18 at the Park Rapids Area Library.

The class is free, the project funded by Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage fund, but size is limited.

The public is invited to Meet the Candidates Night from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18 at the Helga Township Hall in Nary.

Fielding audience questions will be Don Dearstyne and Nathaniel Welte, candidates for Hubbard County Attorney, and Frank Homer and Cory Aukes, candidates for Hubbard County Sheriff.

The audience is asked to submit questions to the candidates. Pencil and paper will be provided or bring your questions with you. The questions will be collected, screened and asked by League members and a moderator.

The League is sponsoring this and other candidate forums to educate the public about issues in the campaigns, provide an opportunity for voters to hear candidates discuss those issues face-to-face, stimulate public interest and participation in the elections and provide an opportunity for the candidates to engage their constituents.

Coffee and cookies will be provided following the event.
