Charges filed against family friend in kidnapping, murder of 5-year-old

Thursday, Nov. 5

-Mantrap Valley Conservation Club will have a deer rifle sight-in from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5 and Friday, Nov. 6 at the club, located 1.5 miles east of Emmaville. The sight-in is open to the public with a fee for nonmembers. Coffee and bars will be served.

Friday, Nov. 6

-The Headwaters Animal Shelter will have its sixth annual holiday bazaar from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 6-7 at the shelter. Find bargains on Christmas items, crafts and gifts including ornaments, trees, stands, linens, toys and games.

-New Life Community Church will have an old-fashioned Christmas bazaar from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 6-7 at the church, located at 207 Grove Ave. in Park Rapids. Antiques, collectibles and baked goods will be available. The church will hold the bazaar every Friday and Saturday in November.

Saturday, Nov. 7

-A craft show and bake sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7 at C'mon Inn in Park Rapids. Christmas crafts, fall floral arrangements, wooden crafts and gifts will be available.

-Ruby's Pantry food distribution will be held starting with registration at 9:30 a.m. and distribution beginning at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Menahga VFW Club. A $15 cash donation at the door will be appreciated. Everyone qualifies to receive food items. Future distributions will be held on the first Saturday of every month at the Catholic Church in Menahga unless otherwise noted. For more information, call Karol or Dave at 564-4501.

-The Menahga Senior Center will have its first annual "Ahhh Menahga" holiday boutique and bake sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7 at the center. There will be baked potatoes and toppings with beverages and cookies.

-The Headwaters Animal Shelter will have a turkey dinner from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7 at the American Legion Club in Park Rapids. Turkey with all the fixings will be served. Hunters are welcome. There will be a cash raffle at 7:30 p.m. with first prize awarding $1,000; second prize $500; third $250 and fourth through 10th $100 each.

Sunday, Nov. 8

-The Guthrie-Nary Lions Club will have its annual hunters breakfast from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8 at the Guthrie Community Center. Free will donations will be accepted. Pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, coffee, juice and milk will be served. Proceeds will go to the Guthrie Community Center and other Guthrie-Nary Lions projects.

-A benefit dinner will be held for Reuben Aho, of rural Frazee, from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8 at the Spruce Grove Apostolic Lutheran Church in Wolf Lake. Reuben was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2001. The cancer has since recurred in 2006, 2008 and most recently in August 2009. Reuben and his wife Nola have nine children and three grandchildren and they all appreciate all the prayers and support. Donations can be sent directly to: Spruce Grove Church, PO Box 45, Wolf Lake, MN 56593. Earmark checks for Reuben Aho benefit.

-Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church in Nevis will have turkey bingo from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8 at the church. There will be 20 games to play. Coffee and lunch will b served for a small fee.

-InterPlay is an active creative way to unlock the wisdom of the body. There will be a session from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8 at Terrapin Station in Nevis. This program will get the body, mind, heart and spirit working together. Anyone can participate regardless of size, shape, ability, gender, orientation or belief. Wednesday, Nov. 11

-Menahga School will have a Veterans' Day program at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11 in the gym. The program will feature VFW Post 6206 Color Guard and area Marine Corps, the Menahga High School band, music by third, fourth and fifth graders and junior and senior high school choirs.

-Century School will have a Veterans' Day program at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11 in the Century School Cafetorium. The program will be presented by students in grades 5-8. Park Rapids American Legion Color Guard Ray Vaadeland will also participate. The public is invited to attend this program honoring the veterans.

-The Park Rapids American Legion will have a 234th birthday party for the United States Marine Corps at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11 at the legion. Everyone is welcome to attend, including all marines, corpsmen, spouses, families and friends. Cake and refreshments will be served while a short program is presented.
