SUNDAY, MARCH 9

Itascatur Club will host an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 9 at Soaring Eagle.

Enjoy the beautiful ski trails and have a cup of hot chocolate in the warming house. Bring your own skis or check-out equipment purchased by the club. They also have a pulk sled that can be used to pull young children while skiing. Volunteers will be available to help you get started and answer your questions about the trails.

Soaring Eagle is located 8 miles north of Park Rapids on Highway 71, across from the Eagle View Golf Course. A Minnesota Ski Pass is required for all skiers age 16 and over.

The Hubbard County DFL Convention will be Sunday, March 9 at the Laporte School. Registration starts at noon and will convene promptly at 1 p.m. Agenda items include election of officers, voting on resolutions and election of delegates to the State Convention. 

MONDAY, MARCH 10

The Hubbard County Relay for Life First Captain’s meeting will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, March 10 at Riverside United Methodist Church, Highway 71 North.

All returning teams and any new team captains are strongly encouraged to attend. Those interested in starting a team should also attend.

Team packets, fundraising ideas and online team registration, will be discussed. Those unable to attend or who want more information may call Kristi at 732-8844.

The 20th annual Relay for Life will be held from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, June 13.

TUESDAY, MARCH 11

Headwaters Center for Lifelong Learning presents Ed Poitras: “Update on the Koreas,” from 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 11 at the Northwoods Bank Community Room. North Korea has captured many headlines recently; this program will provide context for understanding the current situation and events there, as well as examining the significance and impact of the governmental repression. Poitras, who lived in Korea for three decades, will also update and expand on information about South Korea provided in an earlier program, and returns to HCLL for this update by popular request.

The program is free of charge, open to the public, and handicapped-accessible, with space for up to 90 attendees. Treats will be provided. Please park away from the bank building and use the overflow parking available behind the liquor store if needed. The Nevis Red Hat Ladies will have their March luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 11 at the Northwind Café in Nevis. For reservations call Joan at 732-7747.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12

The Park Rapids Enterprise is hosting the fifth annual Chili Challenge as a kick-off for the Hubbard County Food Shelf food- and fundraising drive in March.

The Chili Challenge will be held over the noon hour Wednesday, March 12 at the Park Rapids American Legion.

All proceeds from the event go toward the Hubbard County Food Shelf.

Chili samplers will donate a dollar per dollop (small cupful) of chili. Ballot box stuffing is welcome and encouraged.

Bob Landrigan has created another beautiful wood loon carving for a raffle drawing and the Crazy Quilters have donated an exquisite quilt, “A Good Catch,” by Barbara Coleman.

March is the month to put fundraising into overdrive. Donations received by the food shelf in March are the basis for funding for the entire year through Minnesota FoodShare.

To make a donation to the Hubbard County Food Shelf via the Chili Challenge, send checks made payable to the Hubbard County Food Shelf to the Park Rapids Enterprise, P.O. Box 111, Park Rapids, MN 56470.

Or arrive from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 12 at the Legion to partake in the festivities.

A 55+ driver improvement program will be offered at the Minnesota Highway Safety Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 12 (4 hour refresher course) at the Northwoods Bank community room in Park Rapids.
