Thursday, July 12

The North Country Trail Association, Itasca Moraine chapter will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 12 at the Lake Erin Picnic Grounds, located on the east side of Highway 371, 2.6 miles south of the "Y."  

This hike is a 2.2-mile hike in the Chippewa National Forest from Lake Erin east to the Woodtick Trail.  The hike passes through mixed hardwood and conifer forests and features a classic ancient beaver dam. 

The 8th Crow Wing Book Club will meet at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 12 at 20769 Flying Eagle Dr., Nevis.

Members will read "Major Pettigrew's Last Stand" by Helen Simonson.

The Park Rapids Area Library has provided a "book basket" with 10 copies as well as CDs.

Chapter FQ P.E.O. will hold a meeting at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 12, at the home of Charlotte Peterson with Helen Keezer serving as co-hostess.

The Crazy Quilters Guild of Park Rapids will hold a business meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 12 in the library meeting room.

The Second Street Stage audience will be engaged by the music of The Color Pharmacy from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 12 in downtown Park Rapids. The Color Pharmacy is a powerful trio with some great original music. They are out of the cities, but have played Terrapin Station in Nevis on a couple of occasions and were featured by Lakeland Public Television when they played there. They were at SXSW in Austin, Texas in March and played a show hosted by Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins. They are gaining national attention, but still accessible for the time being. Bands coming up are Matt Ray & Those Damn Horses July 19 and Patchouli July 26. The Park Rapids Downtown Business Association will continue to host 2nd Street Stage events Thursday evenings through Aug. 16. The events also include a beer garden, snacks and family activities on 2nd Street between Main Avenue and Highway 71.

Sanford Bemidji's diabetes support group will meet at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 12 at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center's Education Center. Diabetes educator Sue Davis, RN, will host an Ask the Expert session. 

The group is open to anyone who has diabetes or lives with someone who has diabetes. For more information, contact Sanford Bemidji's Diabetes Resource Center at 218-333-5976.

Friday, July 13

The Guthrie-Nary Lions will host a hamburger social from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 13 at the Guthrie Community Center.

The Lake George Senior Center will have bingo that same evening starting at 7 p.m. and Saturday, July 28 as part of the annual Lake George Blueberry Festival.

The Hubbard County DFL will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, July 16 at Lake George Town Hall.

Tuesday, July 17

PEO Chapter T will meet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 17 at Itasca State Park.

Connie Cox will present a program on Mary Gibb. Lunch will follow in the Red Pine Room at the Douglas Lodge.

The MS Support Group for the Park Rapids area will meet from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 18 at St. Joseph's Area Health Services. The group meets the third Wednesday of each month. Anyone in the area affected by Multiple Sclerosis is invited to attend. The topic this month is "Minimizing Your Risk of Falls, A Guide for People With MS," with a DVD presentation and handout from the from the MS Society. Friends of the Park Rapids Area Library will hold their two-day summer book sale at the library on Thursday, July 19, from 8 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. and Friday, July 20, from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.

At this sale, all children's and young adult books and romance novels (except historical romances) will sell for 10 cents. On Friday, all books in the 10 cent room will be $1 per box, and all remaining newer marked books will be half price.

The sale includes a wide variety of inexpensively-priced novels, non-fiction works, videos, cassettes, CDs, DVDs, puzzles and maps.

The library basement is accessible to all.

The Weston A. Price Nutrition Foundation will have an annual Nourishing Picnic at 4 p.m. Friday, July 20 at the Evergreen Church west of Park Rapids.

Prepare a nourishing dish to share. Make it easy and just bring fruits or vegetables and make sure to bring the whole family. For more information, contact Tanja Larson at 732-9402.

Saturday, July 21

St. Joseph's Area Health Services Foundation will host its 25th annual Hospice Chicken Dinner from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 20 at the American Legion Club in Park Rapids.

All proceeds from the dinner support St. Joseph's Hospice.

On the menu is a full home-style chicken dinner including mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, cranberries, rolls, a beverage and the now-famous brownie sundae dessert bar.

The hospice event is a great time to learn more about St. Joseph's Hospice work with the Department of Veterans Affairs to bring the "We Honor Veterans" program to patients. It is a way to recognize a veteran's unique life story and needs while receiving hospice care.

Saturday, July 21

The Twisted Stitchers will be working outside from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 21, at Pioneer Park, located on the west side of Main Avenue across from Monika's.

Bring a lawn chair. (Members will meet at Monika's in the event of inclement weather).

The Friendly Squares will host a square dance at the American Legion Club in Park Rapids on Saturday, July 21.

The dance will be from 7:30 to 10 p.m. with mainstream dancing and several plus tips. The caller will be Tom Allen and Donna Stone will cue round dancing between tips. Club members will furnish a potluck lunch after the dance. All square dancers and spectators are welcome.
