A March 11 trial date has been set for a Fargo man accused of hitting a fellow golfer in the head with a sand wedge after he complained about slow play.

The trial date for Donald Sauvageau, 58, was set Wednesday in a dispositional conference in Cass County District Court.

Sauvageau faces a charge of aggravated assault in connection with the alleged fight in the parking lot of Rose Creek Golf Course in south Fargo.

As a Class C felony, aggravated assault carries a maximum prison term of five years. Sauvageau has pleaded not guilty.

Trial dates are often set and then moved, but unless there's a plea deal worked out beforehand, the March 11 trial is "day-certain" and will not move, said Cherie Clark, a Cass County assistant state's attorney. She said the defense expects to take the case to trial.

Sauvageau's attorney has said the incident was a case of self-defense and wouldn't have happened if Sauvageau hadn't been provoked.
