Transportation meetings Tuesday on whether Hubbard County should have sales tax
The Minnesota State Legislature has recently enacted legislation to provide counties with ways to supplement funding for Hubbard County local roads (Numbers 80 – 130). The Hubbard County Board of Commissioners is exploring the possibility of approving up to a ½ percent Transportation Sales & Use Tax. A public hearing to discuss the option is scheduled for February 18, 2014 at the LEC Meeting Room (B-109) beginning at 12:30 p.m. and will be continued at the Lake George Town Hall beginning at 7:00 p.m.
If enacted, these funds can be used for rebuilding and maintenance of the 199 miles of our county road system. Complete statute allocation criteria are reflected below.
The primary goal of the legislation is to shift some of the tax burden from local property taxes to a sales tax collected from everyone using the county road system including visitors to the Hubbard County area.
The Department of Revenue, state budget forecast, has projected that a ½ percent Transportation Sales and Use Tax, will provide Hubbard County with $1,000,000 in funding for county road maintenance.
