The Nevis volleyball team had no problem returning to the Section 5A semifinals.

The Tigers, the No. 1 seed in the East West bracket, coasted past No. 5 Royalton 25-5, 25-21, 25-7 last Friday night and defeated No. 2 Onamia 25-19, 25-18, 25-12 Tuesday night at the Tiger Arena to advance to the semifinals.

In the win over Royalton, Riley Hanson's 17 kills and six ace serves and Megan Norby's 10 kills and five ace serves led the Tigers. Those two combined for 33 service points. Olivia Toft had 24 set assists and eight digs while Savannah Gatewood had seven digs. Royalton ended the season with a 6-18-2 record.

Onamia battled the Tigers early in each of the first two sets, but Nevis prevailed in three sets.

Nevis faced a 7-3 deficit in Set 1 before Toft served six straight points and Hanson served five consecutive points to put the Tigers in control. Hanson had a pair of kills during Toft's serve and served a pair of aces as Nevis claimed a 16-8 advantage. Two kills by Norby and a kill by Denia Brown kept the Tigers ahead 19-12 before three kills and an ace serve by Hanson closed out the set.

Two kills by Hanson, a kill by Norby and an ace serve by Toft gave Nevis a quick 8-4 lead in Set 2. Onamia rallied for a 14-14 tie despite a block and two kills by Norby, an ace serve by Hanson and a kill by Hannah Bliss. Nevis took control as an ace serve by Kate Dierkhising was followed by three kills by Norby, two kills by Hanson and a kill by Brown.

An ace serve by Dierkhising, three kills by Hanson, two kills by Norby, a tip by Toft and an ace serve by Katie Becker gave Nevis a 14-5 lead in Set 3. Five kills by Hanson, kills by Norby and Bliss, and a tip by Toft helped seal the win.

Hanson finished with 28 kills, 11 service points and nine digs while Norby had 13 kills and eight digs. Dierkhising (13), Toft (12) and Becker (8) combined for 33 service points while Toft had 37 set assists. Becker (7) and Amanda Hass (6) combined for 13 digs. Onamia ended the season with a 17-10 record.

Nevis was rated No. 6 in the latest state Class A poll. The Tigers carried a 22-8-1 overall record into the semifinal match against Braham. The section championship match is set for tonight (Saturday) at 7 at Pierz.
