Tigers remain undefeated in conference play
The Nevis baseball team remained undefeated in Northland Conference play with wins over Walker-Hackensack-Akeley, Laporte, Cass Lake and Pine River-Backus.
Victory Mastley went 3 for 4 with two runs while Spencer Stack, Austin Becker, Gavin Hitchcock and Phil Moore each went 2 for 3 to pace Nevis’ 14-hit attack in an 11-5 win over W-H-A on April 17. Hitchcock had three RBI and Becker drove in two runs and scored twice. Becker picked up the win, allowing one earned run on five hits with 12 strikeouts over seven innings.
The Tigers swept a doubleheader from Laporte on April 22 by following a 20-3 win with a 24-4 victory.
In the first game, Nevis scored eight runs in the first inning and tallied 16 hits to spark the win. Stack went 2 for 4 with three runs, Andrew Dudley went 3 for 3 with three runs and two RBI, Austin Becker went 3 for 5 with three runs and four RBI, Courtland Chase scored four runs, Gavin Becker had three RBI, Mastley went 3 for 3 with three runs and Moore scored twice. Gavin Becker allowed two unearned runs in three innings for the win.
Nevis used 17 walks and 11 hits to complete the sweep. The Tigers scored eight runs in the first and 12 runs in the third. Mastley went 2 for 3, Hitchcock went 2 for 2 with three RBI, and Austin Becker and Brett Byer scored four runs each. Eddie Nedvicky, Stack, Tucker Roehl, Hitchcock, Chase and Mastley scored two runs apiece. Dudley picked up the win.
Hitchcock allowed two unearned runs on four hits with nine strikeouts in leading the Tigers to a 9-2 win over Cass Lake on April 25. Stack went 2 for 2 with two runs, Austin Becker went 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBI and Gavin Becker went 2 for 5 to pace Nevis’ 11-hit attack.
The Tigers’ winning streak ended last Saturday with losses to Esko (14-4) and Eveleth (6-5).
Nine errors cost the Tigers in the loss to Esko. Austin Becker went 3 for 4 while Mastley scored two runs to place Nevis’ eight-hit attack. Gavin Becker gave up 12 hits, but only one earned run in six innings.
Hitchcock and Moore both went 2 for 4 while Michael Tranby hit a home run in Nevis’ loss to Eveleth. Austin Becker took the loss by allowing two unearned runs in the seventh. Nevis had 10 hits and seven errors in that game.
Nevis improved to 8-0 in conference play by sweeping a doubleheader from Pine River-Backus by scores of 10-0 in six innings and 14-8 on Tuesday.
Tranby had two RBI, Byer went 2 for 3 with two RBI, Hitchcock went 3 for 3 with two RBI, and Stack, Chase and Gavin Becker scored two runs each to lead the Tigers’ eight-hit attack in the first game. Austin Becker tossed a one-hitter with eight strikeouts in a complete-game effort.
Austin Becker went 3 for 4 with four RBI and Dudley went 3 for 3 with three runs and two RBI to lead the Tigers’ 16-hit attack in the second game. Hitchcock hit a home run and had three RBI, Tranby went 3 for 4, Chase went 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles, Mastley went 2 for 4 with two runs and Stack scored two runs for Nevis, which broke open a 6-6 tie by scoring eight times in the fifth. Gavin Becker earned the win.
