Tigers open section play with two victories

Megan Norby served Nevis to early leads in all three sets as the Tigers rolled past Pillager Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the Section 5A volleyball tournament.

Nevis jumped out to leads of 11-0 in Set 1, 8-0 in Set 2 and 9-1 in Set 3 en route to a 25-9, 25-11, 25-12 victory at the Tiger Arena.

The Tigers, the top seed in the Northeast portion of the section bracket, dominated all three sets in eliminating the No. 2-seeded Huskies.

Norby served three aces during a 10-0 run as the Tigers jumped out to an 11-0 lead in Set 1. Riley Hanson and Paige Walters each contributed a kill during that stretch. Two more kills by Hanson and a kill by Annessa Feder pushed the lead to 17-3. Three kills by Norby and a kill by Feder helped close out the opening set.

Three aces by Norby and three kills by Hanson staked the Tigers to a quick 8-0 lead in Set 2. A pair of kills by Hanson and two kills by Walters made it 17-8 before a pair of blocks by Walters and Hanson, an ace serve by Norby, and kills by Hanson and Walters closed out that set.

Two ace serves by Norby during an 8-0 run gave the Tigers a 9-1 lead in Set 3. Ace serves by Olivia Toft, Katie Becker and Feder gave Nevis a 21-8 advantage. Hanson had a winning tip, Feder had a block and Norby had a kill during that stretch. Two more kills by Hanson helped close out the match as Pillager ended the season with a 21-7 record.

Hanson finished with 21 kills, Norby served 10 aces and 28 points, and Toft had 29 set assists for the Tigers.

Nevis advanced to the Section 5A championship match with a 25-19, 25-13, 25-6 win over East Central Thursday night at Pierz. The Tigers, who improved to 31-2, will play Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in the title match. BBE eliminated Bertha-Hewitt 22-25, 25-14, 25-20, 25-17 in Thursday's other semifinal. Pierz will host the section championship match tonight (Saturday) at 7.

Tigers top Onamia in opener

The Tigers opened the section tournament with a 23-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-20 win over No. 4 Onamia last Friday night at Nevis.

Hanson's 27 kills and 13 digs and Norby's 19 kills, 17 service points and six ace serves led the Tigers. Toft served 10 points and had 46 set assists while Walters had 10 kills and 12 digs. Becker and Norby added 11 digs apiece.
