  Gavin Hitchcock rushed for three touchdowns in the first quarter and Kiefer Miller rushed for two touchdowns in the second quarter as the Nevis football team built a 52-12 halftime lead en route to a 60-12 Section 6 9-man quarterfinal victory over Northland Remer Tuesday night at Nevis.


     After Remer took a 6-0 lead on a 50-yard interception return by Zach Norenberg, the Tigers responded with a trio of Hitchcock TD runs to take control.

     Hitchcock scored on TD runs of 8, 6 and 27 yards to give Nevis a 24-6 lead. A 27-yard TD pass from Marcus Woods to Cooper Kovall cut the gap to 24-12 after the first quarter.

     Nevis then dominated the second quarter by scoring four more TDs to carry a 52-12 lead into the half.

     Hunter Darchuk’s 7-yard TD run was followed by TD runs of 26 and 4 yards by Miller. Austin Becker’s 37-yard TD run capped off the first half.

     Darchuk’s 17-yard TD run in the third quarter completed the scoring.

     The Tigers compiled 478 yards in total offense, including 380 on the ground. Miller rushed 13 times for 121 yards, Hitchcock finished with 93 yards on 12 carries and Darchuk rushed eight times for 42 yards to lead a balanced running attack. Austin Becker completed 6 of 10 passes for 98 yards with Gavin Becker catching four passes for 89 yards.

     Defensively, Landon Godwin made five solo tackles and Courtland Chase had four solo tackles. Miller intercepted a pass while Jordan Spenst and Hitchcock recovered fumbles to account for Nevis’ three turnovers.

     The win lifted Nevis, the No. 2 seed in the section, to 7-2 while No. 7 Remer fell to 2-7.

     Nevis will host No. 3 Waubun tonight (Saturday) in a section semifinal game. Waubun defeated No. 6 Cass Lake 42-0 Tuesday night. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m.
