Tigers defend section title, return to state

  Nevis dominated play during the Section 5A volleyball tournament to return to the state Class A tournament for the third year in a row.

     The Tigers, the No. 1 seed in the North 1 bracket, opened the section tournament with a 25-19, 25-13, 25-14 win over No. 5 Pillager at Nevis on Oct. 25 before eliminating Onamia, the No. 2 seed in the North 2 bracket, 25-20, 25-19, 25-12 Oct. 29 at Crosby.

     Nevis completed its quest for state with a 25-15, 25-14, 25-14 win over Braham, the No. 1 seed in the North 2 bracket, Thursday night at Pierz and a 25-19, 25-18, 25-10 rout over Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, the No. 1 seed in the South bracket, Saturday night at Pierz.

     B-B-E was rated No. 6 in the latest state Class A poll while Nevis was rated No. 10.

     In the win over Pillager, Megan Norby had eight kills while Denia Brown added five kills and three solo blocks. Taylor Drury (10), Norby (8) and Olivia Toft (7) combined for 25 service points with Toft tallying 12 set assists. Pillager (which defeated No. 4 Menahga 19-25, 26-24, 22-25, 25-19, 16-14 in the first round) ended the season with a 9-19-3 record.

     Ruby Vedbraaten (11), Savannah Gatewood (10) and Drury (9) combined for 30 service points in leading the Tigers past Onamia. Norby added seven kills and Toft had 14 set assists in that win. Onamia ended the season with a 16-12-1 record.

     Norby and Brown tallied eight kills apiece as the Tigers coasted past Braham. Drury (14) and Hannah Bliss (10) combined for 24 service points, Norby had eight digs and Toft tallied 16 set assists. Braham’s record fell to 22-7.

     In the rematch with B-B-E in the section final, Vedbraaten served 14 points while Toft served a pair of aces and 12 points in leading the Tigers. Norby had eight kills, Brown had six kills, Gatewood had eight digs and Toft had 18 set assists as Nevis prevented B-B-E from advancing to the state tournament for the third consecutive season. B-B-E ended the season with a 24-8-2 record.

     The Tigers carry a 22-9-2 record into a state quarterfinal match with Win-E-Mac Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Win-E-Mac, which defeated Nevis in the quarterfinals in last year’s state tournament, is the No. 4 seed with a 30-3 record. Nevis is the No. 5 seed.

     Thursday’s other state quarterfinal matches pit No. 1 Fillmore Central (33-2) against Ada-Borup (23-8), No. 2 Minneota (29-3) against Carlton (26-5) and No. 3 Southwest Christian (28-5) against Martin County West (26-6).

     The championship and consolation semifinals will be played Friday with the finals set for Saturday.
