Tigers cap third trip to state with consolation title

At last year's state Class A tournament, the Nevis volleyball team rallied late in the quarterfinals and semifinals to reach the championship match.

Win-E-Mac relied on a late rally in Thursday's quarterfinals at the Xcel Energy Center to prevent the Tigers from contending for a spot in this year's championship match.

Nevis, the No. 4 seed, held a 2-1 lead before the No. 5-seeded Patriots rallied for a 25-23, 19-25, 19-25, 25-18, 15-11 victory.

The Tigers were able to rebound from that loss to defeat Martin County West 25-17, 25-16, 25-17 Friday and Underwood 25-18, 25-18, 25-23 Saturday to capture the consolation title.

It marked the second consolation title for the Tigers, who finished fifth in their first state appearance in 2009 before claiming runner-up honors last season.

Bethlehem Academy repeated as state champs by defeating Southwest Christian in the title match while Minneota defeated Win-E-Mac for third place. Bethlehem Academy was rated No. 1, Minneota was rated No. 3, Southwest Christian was rated No. 4, Nevis was rated No. 6, Win-E-Mac was rated No. 8 and Underwood was rated No. 12 in the final state Class A poll.

Senior Riley Hanson and junior Megan Norby were named to the Class A all-tournament team and also earned all-state honors.

The Tigers end the season with a 26-8-1 record.

Win-E-Mac rallies for win

Korbyn Ross and Shelby Kaster combined for 39 kills in leading the Patriots past Nevis and into the semifinals.

In Set 1, three kills by Kaster gave Win-E-Mac a 7-2 lead before the Tigers used four kills by Norby, three kills by Hanson and a kill by Olivia Toft to spark a 15-10 run that tied the set at 17-17. Hanson and Norby followed with kills as the set stayed tied at 22-22, but kills by Ross and Kaster ended the set.

An ace serve and five kills by Norby, three kills and an ace serve by Hanson, a kill by Toft, a block by Norby and Denia Brown, and an ace serve by Kate Dierkhising led the Tigers as both teams battled to a 16-16 tie in Set 2. An ace serve by Toft, kills by Hanson, Hannah Bliss, Melissa Stenberg and Norby, an ace serve by Katie Becker, and a kill by Hanson helped Nevis close out the set with a 9-3 run to even the match.

A kill by Norby, two kills apiece by Hanson and Stenberg, two kills by Norby and an ace serve by Hanson sparked the Tigers to a 10-4 lead in Set 3. After a pair of kills by Norby made it 13-6, a block by Hanson and Toft, an ace serve by Dierkhising, and kills by Hanson, Norby and Bliss gave Nevis a 20-15 edge. A kill by Norby and ace serve by Becker helped the Tigers close out the set.

Four attack errors by the Tigers and two kills by Kaster gave the Patriots a quick 7-0 lead in Set 4. Kills by Brown and Hanson and an ace serve by Dierkhising made it 8-3 before Win-E-Mac used five kills by Ross to build a 17-8 advantage. The Tigers closed the gap to 22-17 behind a kill and ace serve by Hanson and three kills by Norby, but a kill by Kaster closed the set and tied the match.

After kills by Toft and Becker gave Nevis a 3-2 lead in Set 5, a pair of kills by Kaster and three service aces by Megan Olson gave Win-E-Mac an 8-3 advantage. The Tigers rallied behind three kills by Norby and an ace serve by Hanson for a 10-9 edge. Ross ended the match with three kills as the Patriots advanced to the semifinals. Win-E-Mac ended the season with a 28-8 record.

Norby's 28 kills and 16 digs, Hanson's 17 kills and 15 digs, and Toft's 42 set assists and 10 digs led the Tigers.

Tigers advance, play for 5th

The Tigers rebounded from the loss to Win-E-Mac by controlling all three sets against Martin County West.

Nevis never trailed in Set 1 as a service ace by Dierkhising and two kills apiece by Hanson and Norby gave the Tigers a 9-5 lead. A kill by Toft, an ace serve by Dierkhising, two kills by Hanson and a kill by Bliss made it 17-9. Three kills by Norby and an ace serve by Becker closed out the set.

Norby served the Tigers to a 3-0 lead in Set 2 before three kills by Hanson and an ace serve by Toft made it 7-2. A kill by Bliss, five kills by Norby and a kill by Hanson extended the lead to 16-8. Three kills by Hanson and a kill by Brown gave Nevis a 22-16 lead before Norby served an ace to close out the set.

MCW jumped out to a 3-0 lead in Set 3 before kills by Norby, Brown and Hanson, an ace serve by Norby and a kill by Hanson gave Nevis a 6-3 edge. Three kills by Hanson, a kill by Norby and an ace serve by Hanson gave the Tigers a 14-8 advantage. Kills by Bliss, Norby and Hanson and an ace serve by Norby provided a 20-13 cushion before kills by Hanson and Norby closed out the match.

Hanson's 18 kills and 10 digs, Norby's 16 kills and four ace serves, and Toft's 30 set assists and 13 digs led Nevis as MCW ended the season with a 23-11-1 record.

Tigers win consolation title

The Tigers controlled the first two sets before rallying from an early deficit in the third set to defeat Underwood in the consolation title match.

Five kills by Norby, four kills by Hanson and an ace serve by Becker sparked the Tigers to a 12-12 tie in Set 1. Four kills by Hanson, three kills by Norby and an ace serve by Toft sparked a 13-6 run as Nevis took the first set.

Two kills by Hanson, an ace serve by Dierkhising, a kill by Becker, a pair of aces by Hanson, two kills apiece by Brown and Norby, a kill by Bliss and an ace serve by Norby gave Nevis an 18-10 advantage in Set 2. Two ace serves by Carly Masloski helped Underwood close the gap to 19-16 before two kills by Norby and a kill by Brown closed out the set.

Underwood rebounded to claim an early10-4 lead behind two ace serves by Megan Biegler and a pair of kills by Masloski. Two kills apiece by Norby and Hanson made it 16-10 before Toft served five straight points, including an ace and three kills by Hanson, to pull the Tigers to within 16-15. Kills by Hanson and Norby tied the set at 19-19 before three kills by Hanson helped the Tigers close out the match.

Hanson had 23 kills, Norby had 16 kills and Toft had 39 set assists in that match as Underwood ended the season with a 28-6 record.
