Thundershowers in weekend forecast
A very big weekend is upcoming for us this weekend. This weekend marks the "unofficial" start of summer with Memorial Day Weekend.
Many of you will have a three-day weekend and will be out on area lakes boating, fishing, and swimming. Or maybe out golfing, biking, walking, grilling or going to a graduation ceremony. At this stage, it looks like there are chances for showers and thunderstorms over the weekend, but it doesn't look like a washout. The best chances for showers will be late in the evening and overnight. Certainly that could change between now and then, but it doesn't look like a bad weekend.
Of course, this past weekend we had some of those off and on again showers that happen so often this time of the year. Some areas received over two inches of rainfall last weekend. The heaviest amounts of rain were noted mainly across southern Minnesota and towards the Twin Cities. The Alexandria area received about .75" of rainfall over the weekend. A few of those cells did produced winds in excess of 60 mph and large hail.
Typically, in the state of Minnesota we have about 40-60 days with thunderstorms. This is the time of the year for thunderstorms as we are still transitioning from cooler weather to our summer season so the atmosphere can be quite turbulent.
Have a great and safe weekend and remember those who have fallen for our freedoms this Memorial Day weekend!
On this date in 1950 a warm front pushed across the state and pushed temperatures into the 90s.
The growing season in Minnesota varies from about 90 days per year in the Iron Range in northern Minnesota to about 160 days in southeastern Minnesota.
