Three-vehicle collision results in critical injuries to Park Rapids man
Park Rapids Minnesota PO Box 111 56470

A Park Rapids man was critically injured Wednesday night in a three-vehicle head-on collision north of the city.

Hubbard County Sheriff Frank Homer said Drew Huntziger, 57, was north-bound on County Road 4 when he "drifted across the center lane into oncoming traffic."

Huntziger's Dodge Intrepid sideswiped a truck belonging to Mantrap Roofing and driven by 28-year-old Brandon Vredenburg of Menahga, Homer said.

The Huntziger vehicle then "continued in the opposing lane of traffic," Homer said, and struck another southbound vehicle traveling behind the Roofing truck. That car was driven by Zachary Hemenway, 19, of Park Rapids.

Both the Roofing truck and the Hemenway car spun, but were able to come back under control on the shoulder, Homer said.

The Huntziger vehicle "continued into the ditch of the southbound lane of traffic where the driver was ejected," Homer said.

"He had severe head trauma and was unconscious" by the time the ambulance arrived, Homer said. "North Ambulance stabilized him and trans-ported him to St. Joe's in Park Rapids. He was stabilized again" and taken to a Fargo hospital.

Homer said the other two drivers were not injured.

There was a rain/snow mix falling at the time and it was quite dark out at the time the accident occurred just south of County Road 40 at 6:38 p.m.

Homer said the cause of the accident remains under investigation. Weather conditions Wednesday evening prevented the county from calling a life flight helicopter, so Huntziger had to be taken to Fargo by ground ambulance, Homer said.

A nursing supervisor at Meritcare Hospital in Fargo listed Huntziger in serious condition Friday noon.
