Three hat tricks spark Panthers' two victories against section foes

Hat tricks by Sam Coborn, Ian Johnson and Levi Erickson led the Park Rapids-Menahga-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team to a pair of Section 8A victories.

Coborn and Johnson combined for seven goals in leading the Panthers to an 8-2 win over Bagley/Fosston at the Walker Area Community Center Thursday night while Erickson tallied a hat trick in Park Rapids' 5-1 victory over Kittson Central Saturday afternoon at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

The two wins lifted the Panthers to 3-3 against section opponents and above the .500 mark at 6-5-1 overall entering Tuesday's Section 8A game at Thief River Falls.

Coborn, Johnson key win

Coborn's third hat trick of the season and Johnson's first led the Panthers past Bagley/Fosston.

Kyle Kanten set up Johnson's first goal of the game at the 7:19 mark of the first period to tie the game at 1-1.

Johnson and Coborn scored shorthanded goals within a span of 16 seconds midway through the second period to give the Panthers a 3-1 lead. Lucas Maves and Erickson had assists on those goals. Erickson set up Coborn at the 14:25 mark as the Panthers carried a 4-1 lead into the final period.

Coborn completed his hat trick at the 2:51 mark before scoring again at the 8:01 mark. After Kody Walsh and Johnson assisted on a goal by Kyle Kanten at the 12:04 mark, Johnson completed his hat trick at the 15:09 mark. Coborn and Kanten assisted on the final goal of the game.

Goalie Cody Brumbaugh made 25 saves for the win as the Panthers held a 42-27 edge in shots.

Erickson nets first hat trick

Erickson's first hat trick of the season and a season-high 63 shots on goal led the Panthers past Kittson Central for the second time this season.

Erickson's goal at the 5:16 mark of the first period and power-play goal at the 13:06 mark gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead. Noah MacPherson, Johnson and Kanten had assists on those two goals. Johnson and Erickson set up Coborn at the 14:49 mark as the Panthers carried a 3-1 lead into the second period.

Erickson completed his hat trick at the 6:47 mark of the second period on an assist from Coborn, who followed with a goal at the 12:34 mark to conclude the scoring.

Park Rapids, which held an 18-7 edge in shots in the first period and a 20-8 edge in the second period, outshot the Wolfpack 25-9 during a scoreless third period.

Goalie Scott Smith made 23 saves for the win. Park Rapids defeated Kittson Central 10-2 earlier this season.
