It's now hard to believe that just two weeks ago parts of the area had a foot of new snow as a winter storm hit the state of Minnesota. This week, the snow is just a faded memory as that snow continues to melt across the area. It's hard to even find any snow left as the record heat has melted most of that snow away.

This has been a week for the record books. On Tuesday, Park Rapids and most of the area experienced record high temperatures. A new record high for Alexandria was set with a reading of 62 degrees at the airport. Park Rapids hit 60 degrees and came close to a record high. Average highs for this time of the year for the area are 36 degrees.

By Wednesday, a weak cold front pushed across the state and a northwest wind pulled in slightly cooler air. Overnight lows fell into the 30s by Wednesday night, but Park Rapids managed to tie the record high of 59 degrees also set in 1981.

More record high temperatures fell on Thursday and again on Friday as another warm front pushed across the Midwest. High temperatures climbed into the 60s and even 70s around the state.

This year reminds me a great deal of the spring of 1981 when my brother Brad and I went swimming in late March and early April. Many records were also set that spring across the Midwest. The ice was out on many area lakes early that year and I think the same is coming our way this spring.

The long-range outlook calls for above normal temperatures and above normal precipitation for the next 30 to even 90 days. As a result, be safe on area lakes if you are still doing some ice fishing! It won't be long now until we might be swimming early again this year! Now where is that suntan lotion...?

Have a wonderful weekend.
