Tae Kwon Do tournament to bring masses to town
Weapons, forms, sparring and breaking can be seen next weekend in Park Rapids during an invitational Tae Kwon Do tournament.
Park Rapids Tae Kwon Do is hosting the event Saturday, March 10 at Century School.
"It should be pretty awesome," said Master Nick Bretz, of Park Rapids Tae Kwon Do. "These tournaments average between 200 and 500 competitors."
He expects a lot of people will be in Park Rapids next weekend, filling hotels and spending money at local businesses.
The last invitational tournament in Park Rapids was 21 years ago, Bretz said.
His Tae Kwon Do school is part of Lee's Tae Kwon Do Association, which has a presence in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota and Florida.
"Just over 30 schools were invited to our event," Bretz said.
He has been working hard for several months to put on a tournament of this size. He has gotten several local sponsorships to help defray cost of medals and other expenses.
An obstacle course will be set up at the school for something fun and different, Bretz said. Prizes will be awarded to the person who can complete it the fastest.
Competition starts at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10. Events will run until about 3 p.m.
"Everyone seems to really like watching people break boards," Bretz said.
