Swimmers peak at section meet

Friday's preliminaries of the Section 3A meet at Detroit Lakes went well for the nine members of the Park Rapids boys swimming team.

The Panthers clocked 14 season-best times in 18 races and advanced to the consolation finals in six individual events and all three relays.

After Saturday's finals, the Panthers finished 13th in the team standings with 67 points. Fergus Falls claimed the team title with 304 points.

Todd Fritze's team did earn one major honor as the Panthers were named the Section 3A academic champions.

Park Rapids opened Friday's preliminaries by placing ninth in the 200-yard medley relay. Jared Storseth, Ryan McBrady, Sam Goebel and Nick Belfiori teamed up for a season best of 1:51.81.

Goebel then qualified for the consolation finals in the 200 freestyle by placing 15th with a lifetime best of 1:58.44. Josh Johnson (31st in 2:06.71) and Kevin Merfeld (32nd in 2:09.31) also had season-best times.

After Zach Lohmeier clocked a lifetime best of 2:29.26 for 29th place in the 200 individual medley, Storseth qualified for the consolation finals in the 50 freestyle by clocking a lifetime best of 23.87 for 14th place. Belfiori finished 22nd in 24.75.

Storseth also advanced to the consolation finals in the 100 freestyle with a season-best time of 52.34 for 13th place. Belfiori followed with a lifetime best of 55.21 for 27th place.

Goebel clocked a lifetime best of 5:26.40 to finish 10th in the 500 freestyle and earn a spot in the consolation finals. Merfeld finished 23rd in 5:43.47 and Johnson had a lifetime best of 5:49.85 for 24th place.

The Panthers finished 10th in the 200 freestyle relay with a season-best time of 1:40.13 for 10th place. Storseth, Belfiori, Zach Eystad and Goebel comprised that relay team.

In the 100 backstroke, Connor Smythe finished 14th with a lifetime best of 1:04.45. Eystad tied his lifetime best with a 1:09.90 for 25th place.

McBrady earned a spot in the consolation finals of the 100 breaststroke by clocking a lifetime best of 1:08.47 for 11th place.

Park Rapids ended preliminaries by placing 13th in the 400 freestyle relay. Merfeld, Smythe, McBrady and Eystad teamed up for a 4:05.89.

During Saturday's finals, all three relay teams improved on their times.

Storseth, McBrady, Goebel and Belfiori finished ninth in 1:49.44 to give the Panthers 18 points in the 200 medley relay.

Goebel placed 16th in the 200 freestyle with a 2:00.43 and followed by placing 13th in the 500 freestyle with a 5:30.32. Storseth finished 13th in the 50 freestyle with a 24.19 and took 14th in the 100 freestyle with a 52.75. Those four finishes added 12 points to the Panthers' team total.

Storseth, Belfiori, Eystad and Goebel finished ninth in the 200 freestyle relay with a 1:36.37 for 18 points.

Smythe and McBrady added 11 points to the Panthers' team score as Smythe finished 13th in the 100 backstroke with a 1:04.48 and McBrady took 10th in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:08.11.

Park Rapids ended the meet by placing 13th in the 400 freestyle relay as Merfeld, Smythe, McBrady and Eystad teamed up for a 3:57.44.

The top-four finishers in each event and others who met the state-qualifying standards advance to the state Class A meet, which begins Thursday at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.
