Swimmers open year with a win at Warroad

A 1-2 finish in the 200-yard medley relay set the tone as the Park Rapids girls swimming and diving team opened its dual season with a 102-81 victory at Warroad last Thursday night.

Katherine Erickson, Mandy Schirmers, Allycia Zinke and Lauren Rossman opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 2:02.32 and Taylor Ondracek, Melissa Haas, Leah Meinert and Heather Kniss followed in 2:08.17 as the Panthers jumped out to a 12-2 lead.

Emily Creager (2:10.14) and Schirmers (2:10.83) followed with a 1-2 showing in the 200 freestyle before Zinke won the 200 individual medley in 2:29.85. A 1-2 finish by Rossman (27.82) and Hannah Williams (28.44) in the 50 freestyle pushed the Panthers' lead to 44-18.

Zinke (1:08.72), Rossman (1:11.56) and Taylor Graham (1:13.75) went 1-2-3 in the 100 butterfly before Creager won the 100 freestyle in 58.97. The Panthers followed with another 1-2 showing as Erickson (5:50.96) and Meinert (6:00.06) led the way in the 500 freestyle.

Creager, Kniss, Williams and Rossman clocked a winning time of 1:52.17 in the 200 freestyle relay before Erickson (1:05.91) and Ondracek (1:06.82) went 1-2 in the 100 backstroke.

The Panthers, who held a 102-54 lead, swam exhibition in the final two events. Schirmers clocked a 1:15.81 in the 100 breaststroke and joined Creager, Zinke and Erickson on the 400 freestyle relay team that clocked a 4:00.79.

Warroad won the junior varsity meet by a 103-82 margin. Leading the Panthers with winning times were Ellen Hoffman, Christina Mackley, Graham and Jessica Andersen in the 200 medley relay (2:16.63); and Seri Erickson in the 200 freestyle (2:34.62) and 500 freestyle (6:42.66).

"The girls swam pretty well," said Park Rapids head coach Todd Fritze. "It was a good starting point for us."

The Panthers will make their home debut Monday night at 6 by hosting Fosston/Bagley.
