SWCD to host a winter grazing workshop Jan. 18 in Laporte

Hubbard Soil and Water Conservation District will host the first annual winter grazing workshop Wednesday, Jan. 18 at the Lakeport Town Hall, Laporte.

The workshop is for area farmers, ranchers, land-owners or anyone interested in grazing techniques, environmental quality and conservation Farm Bill programs.  The workshop is funded through a Grazing lands Conservation Association (GLCA) grant.

Pre-registration is appreciated as space is limited; contact Melissa Koebernick at 732-0121.   

Sign-in begins at 9 a.m. at the Lakeport Town Hall; the workshop will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Discussions will be led by University of Minnesota Beef Team on forages for grazing, ryegrass turnips and out-wintering and selecting efficient cows.  The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will present information on farm bill conservation programs and technical assistance opportunities.

 Dr. Kevin Haroldson, veterinarian, will present on vaccinations.  A local farmer will speak about the pros and cons of transitioning into a rotational grazing system.  

Speakers include: Dr. Paul Peterson, Russell Mathison and Dr. Grant Crawford with the University of Minnesota; Mark Hayek, NRCS grazing specialist; Rick Berscheid, NRCS District Conservationist; Norton and Carol Berg, local beef farmers, and Haroldson.
