Suspected drunken driver hits Bemidji squad car
On March 15th, 2013 at approximately 2:30 am the driver of a 1999 Dodge collided with back end of a Bemidji Police Department squad car while the officer was on a separate traffic stop near the intersection of 13th street NE on Bemidji Avenue. The officer narrowly escaped injury as the collision occurred. The collision caused major damage to the rear of the squad car and pushed it into the rear end of the first vehicle causing moderate damage. No other injuries were reported.
The driver of the 1999 Dodge truck, Brett Michael Delange, age 22, failed field sobriety testing and a preliminary breath test. Mr. Delange has been arrested and charged with 4th degree DWI. The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office is investigating this case.
The Bemidji Police Department would like to remind drivers of the Ted Foss “move over” law which requires all drivers to slow down and move over, on roads with two or more lanes, when approaching ANY stopped emergency vehicle. In August of 2000 Minnesota State Patrol Corporal Ted Foss died when a semi veered off the road and struck him during a traffic stop.
