"After a dry and warm period over the past week, the weather pattern over the Northern Plains will begin to change by Saturday," the weather service's Grand Forks office says on its website. "Moisture and instability will move into the area on Saturday, and a front will become nearly stationary into next week. Several areas of low pressure will move along this boundary, and thunderstorms may become likely by Saturday afternoon into Sunday. Some storms could be strong to severe with locally heavy rain, particularly Saturday night."

The weather service says more strong to severe storms are possible next week, with another system moving into the region Monday.

The rain is expected to reach the Devils Lake basin as soon as Friday night, the weather service says, as warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico draws northward.

"At this time, the heaviest rainfall appears likely in the Devils Lake basin and the northern Red River Valley," generally north of a line from New Rockford, N.D., to Grand Forks to Warroad, Minn., during the weekend and early next week, the weather service said in a precipitation advisory.
