Strong finish leads W-H-A boys past Panthers

     Walker-Hackensack-Akeley closed the game with a 19-8 run to pull away for an 82-72 win over the Park Rapids boys basketball team Tuesday night at the Area High School gym.

     Jordan McCollum’s 3-pointer gave the Panthers a 64-63 lead with 5:51 to play before a layup by Logan Gross, a jumper by Chris Duff and a layup by Dustin Ovitt gave W-H-A a 69-64 edge with 4:51 to play.

     After a 3-pointer by Tyler McCollum cut the gap to 69-67 with 2:31 left, a 3-pointer by Austin Richter, layups by Duff and Gross, and five free throws by Duff sparked the Wolves to the victory.

     This game was close throughout as the teams battled through 14 lead changes and nine ties.

     A pair of 3-pointers and a jumper by Tyler McCollum gave the Panthers an 8-3 advantage at the 14:35 mark before layups by Jared Andersen and Josh Widman and four free throws by Duff gave W-H-A an 11-8 edge at the 12:32 mark.

     Zach Jewison scored off a rebound and Tyler McCollum hit another 3-pointer as the Panthers led 13-11 at the 11:12 mark. Jordan McCollum’s two layups were offset by a pair of jumpers by Duff as the game was tied at 21-21 with 6:43 to play in the first half.

     Layups by Duff, Widman and Ovitt gave the Wolves a 27-21 advantage with 5:28 to go in the first half before a three-point play and layup by Jewison gave Park Rapids a 28-27 edge at the 3:56 mark.

     A 3-pointer by Richter was countered with another three-point play by Jewison while a jumper by Duff was offset by a layup by Jordan McCollum as W-H-A carried a 36-35 lead into the break.

     Jewison opened the second half with three inside baskets, Rilee Johnson hit three baskets inside and Tyler McCollum hit a 3-pointer as the Panthers led 51-45 with 12:06 to play.

     The Wolves responded with 3-pointers by Duff and Richter to take a 54-53 lead with 9:50 left before a jumper by Johnson, a layup by Tyler McCollum, two layups by Jewison and a 3-pointer by Jordan McCollum gave the Panthers a 64-63 lead with 5:51 to play.

     W-H-A then went on a 15-4 run for a 78-68 lead with 51 seconds left.

     Duff finished with a game-high 31 points while Richter used five 3-pointers to add 17 points. Ovitt also hit double figures with 16 points as the Wolves improved to 17-4 with their seventh win in a row. W-H-A has won 12 of its last 13 games.

     Only four Park Rapids players scored with Jordan McCollum’s 22 points and five assists leading the way. Tyler McCollum and Jewison added 21 points apiece with Jewison pulling down a team-high 15 rebounds as the Panthers fell to 13-8 on the season.

Lakers defeat Panthers

     Detroit Lakes guaranteed at least a share of the Mid-State Conference title with an 83-53 win over the Panthers last Friday night at Detroit Lakes.

     Park Rapids held a 7-6 lead before the Lakers went on a 15-4 run to take the lead for good. After the Panthers closed the gap to 24-20, Detroit Lakes closed the half with a 17-5 run for a 41-25 advantage at the half before opening the second half with a 15-5 run for a commanding 56-30 cushion with 15:03 to play.

     Jackson Lyngaas (13), Trey Lyngaas (13), Briton Thompson (13), Ryan Cihak (11) and Ben Hokanson (10) hit double figures for the Lakers, who improved to 9-1 in the conference and 14-6 overall. Crosby-Ironton is 5-1 in the conference with four games to play.

     Tyler McCollum scored 16 points, Johnson added 12 points and five assists, and Jordan McCollum had eight rebounds and five assists for the Panthers, who fell to 5-4 in the conference.
