Jon Melgaard broke the pool diving record in leading the Detroit Lakes boys swimming and diving team to a 106-80 victory over Park Rapids Tuesday night at the Area High School pool.

Melgaard's 309.60 points broke the pool record of 246.25 points set by Park Rapids' Cody Olander in 1996 and led the Lakers to a 1-2-3 sweep in that event. Detroit Lakes claimed a 47-31 lead after diving and went on to win this Mid-State Conference dual meet.

The Panthers opened the meet with a runner-up 1:50.68 by Connor Smythe, Ryan McBrady, Sam Goebel and Nick Belfiori in the 200-yard medley relay before Josh Johnson (2:01.51), Zach Eystad (2:06.48) and Kevin Merfeld (2:13.04) went 2-3-4 in the 200 freestyle. Goebel's winning time of 2:17.41 and McBrady's third-place 2:21.54 in the 200 individual medley enabled Park Rapids to tie the dual at 23-23.

Belfiori finished second in the 50 freestyle in 24.49 as the Panthers faced a 34-28 deficit. The Lakers extended their lead in diving and maintained a 16-point lead by winning three of the next five events.

Goebel won the 100 butterfly in 1:01.81, Eystad (54.55) and Belfiori (55.08) went 2-3 in the 100 freestyle, and Johnson clocked a runner-up 5:40.99 in the 500 freestyle as the Panthers trailed 72-54.

Belfiori, Goebel, Johnson and Eystad won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:37.28 and Smythe (1:03.34) and Zach Lohmeier (1:09.51) went 2-3 in the 100 backstroke as Detroit Lakes held on to an 86-70 advantage.

The Lakers won the final two races as McBrady clocked a runner-up 1:08.21 in the 100 breaststroke and Johnson, McBrady, Smythe and Eystad teamed up for a runner-up 3:53.58 in the 400 freestyle relay for the Panthers.

Detroit Lakes posted a 107-51 victory in the junior varsity meet. Leading the Panthers were Jake Waggoner (first in 2:13.42) and Steven Osterman (second in 2:16.52) in the 200 freestyle; Spencer Adolphson (first in 2:51.96) in the 200 individual medley; James Wells (second in 1:03.35) in the 100 freestyle; Kyle Merfeld (first in 1:24.01) and Tyler Breitweser (second in 1:24.84) in the 100 backstroke; and Osterman, Fred Stinar, Adolphson and Waggoner in the 400 freestyle relay (second in 4:31.65).
