Herman Stieng had never run in a track meet until this spring.

His first season in track resulted in a trip to the state Class A meet.

On Saturday, Stieng became the first member of the Park Rapids boys track and field team to qualify for the state meet since 2002 with a runner-up showing in the 400-meter dash at the Section 8A meet at Park Rapids.

Stieng, a foreign exchange student from Norway, played soccer year-round before competing in football, basketball and track at Park Rapids this spring.

Stieng turned out to be a natural on the track.

"I heard from kids and the phy ed teachers that Herman was pretty fast and that I should get him out for track," said Park Rapids head coach Patrick Deegan. "He started the season running in the 55s and he got down to the 51s. He was seeded No. 2 and I thought if he ran well he was going to go to state."

Stieng, who won the Subsection 8-29A title in 51.83, clocked a 52.10 to finish behind the winning time of 50.31 clocked by Roseau's Wade Kerner. Park Rapids' Austin Carlson was third in 52.86.

That 2-3 showing in the 400 dash helped the Panthers compile 29 points to tie for eighth place in the team standings. Thief River Falls led the 21-team field with 101 points.

Stieng and Carlson joined Brock Fritze and Forrest Drury to finish third in the 4 x 400 relay with a time of 3:37.84. Drury also took fourth in the pole vault by clearing 12 feet and Carlson finished eighth in the 200 dash in 24.92.

Also scoring points for the Panthers were Scott Wolff in the triple jump (seventh at 38-11.50) and the 4 x 800 relay team of Sam Goebel, Ryan McBrady, Travis Deitchler and Taylor Kimball (eighth in 9:26.54).

Stieng, whose season best is a 51.5, will be looking to place in his state debut. The state meet will be held at Hamline University in St. Paul. Stieng will compete in the preliminaries of the 400 dash Friday afternoon. Stieng is seeded 14th out of 16 state qualifiers. The top nine on Friday advance to Saturday's finals.

The last time the Panthers were represented at state was in 2002 when Paul Johanning (pole vault), Brady Zubke (300 hurdles), and Jeff Wilkins, Anthony Novak, J.T. Lempola and Zubke (4 x 400 relay) qualified.

"Herman has his work cut out for him," said Deegan. "Hopefully he can advance to the finals."
